In collaboration with Adelaide Festival Centre’s Adelaide French Festival, the stunning Carrick Hill estate presents two days of free and low-cost French inspired activity. Nestled in the foothills and only 15 minutes from the city, this beautiful historic house and garden provides the perfect place to spend a gorgeous summer day. Admire French cars, play a family game of Petanque, listen to a guest speaker, join a guided tour through the house or simply sit under the elm trees and listen to beautiful music with a cafe au lait and pastry...

Inside the house, Ursula Hayward’s love of France will be on display. Visit the house over the duration of the weekend to view Carrick Hill’s French collection and some borrowed French pieces, including paintings, decorative arts and books.

The Guided Tours will focus on the French items within the collection and provide some insight into why the Hayward’s collected these works.

Carrick Hill is pleased to have members of the South Australian Petanque League providing demonstration. Come along and see how to play petanque and then try it for yourself.

Stables Lawns, Carrick Hill

The Stables Lawns will be home to a display of French motor vehicles. Members of Club Citroen of South Australia Inc, Vintage Sports Car Club of South Australia Inc, Citroen Societe of South Australia Inc, Club Automobile Francais Inc, Sporting Car Club of South Australia Inc will bring along their finest examples of French automotive manufacturing, including Bugattis and Amilcars.


Carrick Hill Grounds

Throughout the weekend there will be a range of entertainment in the grounds, from the beautiful sounds of a French trio, to a Bastille-style clown, and more.

Les Flâneurs Volants
Drawing on material from the French diaspora and lifetimes spent immersed in French culture, Les Flâneurs Volants presents songs, stories and fun accompanied by ukulele, guitar and accordion. Above all the trio expresses la joie de vivre.

Mélange à Trois
“Mélange à Trois” play a sultry blend of French Bossa Nova, 60’s French Pop, Gypsy Jazz and original music. Since forming in Adelaide in July 2017, they have been wowing the local French & Australian community.

Alan Holy
Alan trained at the Victorian College of the Arts Drama School and has extensive experience with entertaining audiences. Alan’s Bastille-style clown is fun for all ages and will be found roving throughout the grounds during the weekend.

Living in Paris: A Talk by Steve Brown

Steve Brown is an event design practitioner/academic who has worked in the events industry for more than 35 years. He has worked in all states of Australia, a little in the US and Sweden and has run event design and management workshops across Australia, in Canada, Sweden and South Africa. He is widely published in the fields of event design and audience behaviour and has received State Awards for his contribution to the industry and teaching, and was recognised with a national award for his event programs at Flinders University. Steve is currently consulting to the Adelaide Festival and is Creative Producer for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for their concert Let’s Go Crazy: A Symphonic Tribute to Prince.

More important than all that, Steve lived in an artist’s apartment in Paris for 3 months and had the adventure of a lifetime… an adventure that is there for all to share. He shares apocryphal tales of his adventure and how not speaking French became the key that opened the door to the experience.
