Friends of Carrick Hill - Evening Program
When Friends Committee member Brian Hancock told Ewan Hazeldine about a cruise he and his wife had taken to New Guinea, Ewan told him that, as a young engineer, he had once worked there. That was a time shortly before New Guinea gained its independence from Australia, and Ewan is able to provide an historical insight (including being in Rabaul at the time the local volcano erupted!) into life as it was then in a society that has changed much since. When Brian mentioned to him that they had visited the Trobriand Islands as part of the cruis, Ewan said "Oh, the Islands of Love!", and gave Brian the bare facts as to what led to the islands being given that name. All will be revealed (so to speak) on the night!
