Sir Jacob Epstein's striking 1911 statue, Standing Mother and Child, has long stood sentinel facing the front door of the house. It is a reminder that although Sir Edward and Lady Hayward did not have children of their own, they enjoyed the company of young people.

Local children were invited to Christmas festivities at Carrick Hill. In 1933 Sir Edward gave the children of South Australia the greatest Christmas gift of all when he founded the annual Christmas Pageant. He was named 'Father of the Year' in 1973 to acknowledge this great gift, and the Christmas Pageant continues today-a tradition that is as great a Hayward legacy as Carrick Hill itself.
