The works of art and other items worked as “souvenirs” or aide memoires, as a record of the Haywards' travels on their return to Adelaide.

The fine and decorative arts collections of Carrick Hill are eclectic in nature, largely because of the manner in which they came together. Rather than acquire works in order to create a considered and representative collection, the Haywards bought paintings, sculptures, decorative art and books that reflected their broad ranging interests and fascination with contemporary and modern thinking, and the friendships that enhanced their lives.

Decorative Arts

Rather than collecting works to create a representative collection, Carrick Hill’s eclectic decorative arts collections reflect the Haywards varied interests, fascination with contemporary design, and historical influences.

Furniture and Furnishings

Carrick Hill has a superb collection of antique furniture, collected by the Haywards to complement their English manor style house. It is a fascinating mixture from the Tudor to mid-twentieth century periods, primarily made from oak.

The Haywards not only loved their works on paper, board, and canvas, but also actively collected sculptural works.

The Australian Museum of Gardening has an extensive and diverse collection of tools and implements, primarily of British, North American, and Australian origin, as well as an extensive reference library and archive collection.

Something a little different

While the Haywards surrounded themselves with beautiful artworks, their home at Carrick Hill was also filled with objects that were stylish, quirky, fun, and sometimes risqué.
